ENCYCLOPEDIA


Encyclopedia is a book or a set of books that contains information about many different subjects. Encyclopedias are usually the first reference resource we use to find basic information on a research topic.

encyc3.jpgGeneral encyclopedias provide information about nearly every topic.
They usually have several volumes

encyc1.jpgSubject encyclopedias focus their information on one particular area of study.
Various topics in encyclopedias are arranged alphabetically. There is also an index at the end, listing all the key words in alphabetical order.
Encyclopedias are published in a book or electronic form.

NONFICTION BOOKS

penguin.jpgNonfiction books contain information about different subjects. They also include pictures, photographs, charts, maps and other graphics.

All nonfiction books have a CONTENTS PAGE at the beginning and an INDEX and a GLOSSARY at the end.

TABLE OF CONTENTS is a list of book chapters in the order they appear in a book with corresponding page numbers. It helps the reader find information about main topics in the book.
INDEX is a list of key words, arranged alphabetically.
GLOSSARY explains difficult or unusual words used in the text.

Pictures in nonfiction books include LABELS and CAPTIONS:
LABEL helps the reader identify a picture or photograph
CAPTION helps the reader better understand a picture or photograph.

DICTIONARY AND THESAURUS


DICTIONARY

A dictionary is a book that contains an alphabetical list of words with their meanings.
It also shows how to pronounce the word, and gives examples how the word is used.

THESAURUS


thesaur.jpgThesaurus is a dictionary of SYNONYMS and ANTONYMS.
SYNONYM is the word having the same meaning (or nearly the same meaning) as some other word.
Example: joyful, glad.

ANTONYM is a word of opposite meaning from some other word.
Example: Fast is an antonym of slow.

Thesaurus is also published in a printed or electronic form.
